Michael Luca Takes the Helm at Carnegie Mellon’s Block Center for Technology and Society

In a pivotal move for Carnegie Mellon University, Michael Luca, an esteemed Professor of Economics, Technology, and Policy, has been named the new director of the Block Center for Technology and Society. Luca’s dual role also includes the title of Trustees Professor of Technology and Society, where he will spearhead initiatives to evaluate the societal impact of emerging technologies.

The Block Center, established in 2019 through the philanthropy of alumnus Keith Block and his wife Suzanne Kelley, aims to ensure that technological advancements benefit society as a whole. It unites researchers, policymakers, and business leaders to turn academic insights into actionable strategies for real-world challenges.

This founding premise still guides everything the center does,” stated Keith Block, founder and CEO of Smith Point Capital. “We’re proud to see the Block Center enter this next chapter under Mike’s leadership.”

Carnegie Mellon provides a unique setting for the center’s mission, as it combines innovative technology development with research into its societal impacts. The university has a historical strength in fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer science, complemented by expertise in economics, public policy, and the arts.

Luca’s previous work has highlighted discrimination in online marketplaces like Airbnb, prompting significant changes in platform design and measurement of discrimination. His advisory roles with organizations such as the OECD and contributions to publications like The Wall Street Journal further exemplify his commitment to connecting research with real-world applications.
