Meet UVA Parents Offering Insights on College Life in Charlottesville

Parents of UVA Students Share Their Experiences and Insights

Every autumn, the University of Virginia welcomes a new batch of students, affectionately known as Wahoos, as they transition into dorm life. Families play a crucial role during this period, from move-in days to attending Family Weekends and offering support during football games. Many parents, having experienced this journey before, now offer valuable advice to newcomers through a unique initiative by UVA Today.

Six seasoned parents have been selected as correspondents to share their experiences and offer guidance to others navigating the college journey. Here’s a closer look at these veteran UVA parents:

Jackie Brence

Jackie, a McIntire School of Commerce alumna, graduated in 1992 and is the mother of three UVA students: Madeline (Class of 2022), Jillian (Class of 2024), and Nathan, currently in his third year. Residing in Stafford, Jackie hones her skills in government and nonprofit communications while enjoying reading and running in her spare time.

A Colby College alumna with master’s degrees in social work and English education, Marah works in K-12 admissions at Columbus Academy in Ohio. In her downtime, she delights in writing, cooking, and traveling.

Now residing in Arlington with his wife, Elenor McLean Hodges (Class of 1990), he is the father of Brita, a third-year student majoring in economics and statistics. Brita is also active in rugby, Best Buddies, and serves as a history guide. Rick’s upcoming historical novel, “The Death of Driftwood,” is set to release in February. More about his work can be found on his website.

Juliet, a 1995 College of Arts & Sciences graduate, lives in Leesburg with her husband, Jeremy, a 1994 graduate and 1997 law school alumnus. They have three young adult children, including Emory, a fourth-year student at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. Juliet is a dedicated teacher in Loudoun County and an enthusiastic volunteer for the UVA Club of Loudoun. She is passionate about supporting new students and parents, especially during the first college year. A fan of the Cavalier Marching Band, Juliet enjoys her time at Scott Stadium.
