Lehigh University to Sell WLVR-FM License to Lehigh Valley Public Media

Lehigh University Transitions WLVR-FM License to Lehigh Valley Public Media

Lehigh University has decided to transfer its Federal Communications Commission (FCC) broadcast license for 91.3 WLVR-FM to Lehigh Valley Public Media (LVPM). This decision marks a significant shift in the university’s approach to student education in digital content creation.

Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Nathan Urban, emphasized the advantages of this partnership, stating, “Lehigh’s collaboration with Lehigh Valley Public Media has provided students with valuable professional experiences and enriched our community with essential local news.” He further added that the university is keen on adapting this partnership to better prepare students for a future in digital and multimedia innovation, focusing on equipping them with necessary skills such as advanced digital fluency and AI-readiness.

Back in 2019, LVPM took over the management and operational responsibilities of WLVR under Lehigh University’s guidance. This partnership facilitated the transformation of 91.3 FM into a multi-channel HD broadcast station. Despite maintaining the HD-2 signal for a student-driven station, Lehigh University noticed a trend of decreased student interest in traditional radio broadcasting, with a growing preference for on-demand and digital-first media formats.

Hasanna Birdsong, President & CEO of Lehigh Valley Public Media, appreciated the ongoing collaboration, stating, “We value the relationship we’ve had with Lehigh University to operate WLVR and the talented students who have contributed through our internship program.” Birdsong assured continued support for initiatives that offer students invaluable practical media experiences through LVPM’s multimedia platforms.

The transition of ownership is currently awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission.
