DOE Roadshow Visits Lehigh, Highlights Energy Innovation and Collaboration

DOE Roadshow Highlights Energy Innovation at Lehigh University

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) has been actively engaging with top-tier institutions and stakeholders nationwide through its Powering America Roadshow, with a recent stop at Lehigh University. This initiative aims to foster collaboration and modernization in energy infrastructure to meet the growing demands across the country.

Lehigh University, the first university in Pennsylvania to be spotlighted on this tour, was praised for its role in transforming theoretical science into practical energy solutions. Lehigh’s President, Joseph J. Helble ’82, emphasized during his public remarks, “As a national Carnegie R1 research university, Lehigh’s strength lies in turning fundamental science in the classroom and laboratory into impactful, field-ready energy solutions that serve our communities and our economy.” He noted the institution’s commitment to advancing innovations crucial for enhancing America’s energy resources and competitiveness.

Curt Coccodrilli, Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at the DOE HGEO, underscored the significance of visiting eastern Pennsylvania and Lehigh University in particular. Acknowledging the area’s historical contribution through Bethlehem Steel, Coccodrilli remarked, “One of the most critical parts to our infrastructure and history comes right out of this area: Bethlehem Steel.” He expressed his admiration for the local spirit and enthusiasm, stating, “I saw today the spirit, the enthusiasm. These folks are the ones who are going to change the world and I was honored to be a part of that.”

The Roadshow’s engagement at Lehigh University reflects a broader strategy to integrate academic innovation into national energy strategies, thereby ensuring that the United States remains at the forefront of energy technology and infrastructure development.
