Governor Stein Announces New Funding for Rural Health, SUN Bucks Program

Governor Stein Advocates for Health Care, Nutrition, and Drone Safety in North Carolina

In a focused effort to improve the welfare of North Carolinians, Governor Josh Stein has announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing health care accessibility, ensuring children’s nutrition during summer, and safeguarding communities from the risks posed by unmanned drones. These initiatives come as the state faces challenges such as the expiration of federal Affordable Care Act tax credits and the need for a comprehensive state budget to fund Medicaid.

Rural Health Care Enhancement

Governor Stein revealed a significant boost in funding for rural health care through the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP). North Carolina secured $213 million to expand health care services in rural areas. This funding aims to support over 3 million residents, focusing on strengthening the health care workforce, advancing technology, and improving mental health services.

Governor Stein stated, “RHTP funding will help improve health care access for the more than 3 million North Carolinians living in rural communities.” He praised the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) for its role in securing these funds.

Summer Nutrition Through SUN Bucks

Addressing food insecurity among children, the SUN Bucks program is set to return to North Carolina this summer, supported by a public-private partnership. The initiative, which offers a one-time payment to families for summer groceries, is a crucial resource as school meal programs pause during vacation months.

“Hunger doesn’t take a vacation when schools let out for the summer,” Governor Stein emphasized. He urged the General Assembly to incorporate SUN Bucks into the state budget. Through partnerships with organizations like the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, SUN Bucks aims to bridge the gap for families needing access to nutritious food.

Ensuring Safety from Malicious Drones

Governor Stein is actively working to mitigate the threats posed by unmanned drones. Alongside Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, Stein led a coalition urging Congress to pass the Safer Skies Act, which grants law enforcement enhanced authority to address drone threats.

“Drones can be useful and even save lives, but the risks are also real,” Governor Stein noted. The Safer Skies Act, included in the National Defense Authorization Act, empowers officers to protect communities from unauthorized drone use, reinforcing the state’s commitment to security.

Through these programs, Governor Stein continues to prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of North Carolina’s residents, advocating for legislative support and collaboration across various sectors.
