Free AI Series: Navigating Ethical Concerns and Local Community Impact

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, it raises pertinent questions about its impact on various facets of our lives. This October, the Northeast Regional Library will host a free educational series led by Alison Macrina of the Library Freedom Project, designed to address these critical issues. The sessions aim to elucidate the broader implications of AI on labor, mental health, cognition, the environment, privacy, and misinformation.

A Skeptic’s Guide to AI

Scheduled for Friday, October 23, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, this initial session will provide an overview of the ethical dilemmas posed by artificial intelligence. Participants will gain insights into tools that encourage a critical evaluation of AI’s applications.

I Didn’t Ask For This AI

On Saturday, November 28, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, attendees are invited to bring their devices for a guided session focused on identifying and disabling unwanted AI features on popular platforms.

Understanding Local AI Use

Concluding the series on Saturday, December 12, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, this session will delve into AI applications in local contexts, including surveillance and data center initiatives, and explore community actions to influence AI deployment.

These sessions are open to all individuals, whether they are cautious, habitual users, or simply curious about AI. The series encourages attendees to engage with experts and peers about AI’s current and future roles in society.

Register here to secure your spot, though walk-ins are welcome.

Additionally, the South Philadelphia Library is hosting a three-part Critical AI Literacy series this fall, offering programs on critical AI thinking, identifying AI scams, and understanding AI applications in communities.

This initiative is supported by the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Foundation, as part of Community Impact Week and funded by The Lydia Eloise Seïbert Fund.
