Flint’s Recycling Success: A Record-Breaking Milestone
The City of Flint has reached an unprecedented achievement with its recycling efforts, setting a new record for the highest recycling rate in the city’s history. This accomplishment highlights Flint’s ongoing commitment to improving recycling accessibility for its residents.
On Monday, key figures including Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, City of Flint Waste Services Coordinator Heather Griffin, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Director Phillip Roos, and leaders from Genesee County gathered to commemorate this significant milestone and spotlight Flint’s expanding recycling initiatives.
This milestone comes two years after the city distributed over 68,000 free trash and recycling carts to more than 34,000 Flint households. The 2024 rollout signified Flint’s shift to a cart-based system, simplifying curbside recycling for its residents.
Since the introduction of the lidded, rolling recycling carts, the volume of recycled materials in Flint has surged from 624 tons annually before the program to over 2,200 tons per year according to the 2026 analysis. This marks a remarkable 253% increase, improving access to recycling, boosting resident participation, reducing neighborhood blight, and enhancing safety for Priority Waste sanitation workers.
Mayor Sheldon Neeley remarked, “This is a great example of what happens when we invest in our residents and make it easier for them to participate. Flint residents are recycling more, and that is something our entire community can be proud of. We are building on that progress as we look toward the proposed Genesee County Recycling & Education Center and continued investment in recycling infrastructure.”
The proposed Genesee County Recycling & Education Center, backed by EGLE funding, aims to further enhance regional recycling infrastructure and educational efforts.
Monday’s event also included participation from Flint neighborhood recycling advocates. Frank, EGLE’s Recycling Raccoon mascot, was present to help celebrate this achievement.
