Nevada’s Legal Battle Over Colorado River Water Allocation Intensifies
Nevada’s Attorney General Aaron Ford has initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration in response to proposed reductions in the state’s Colorado River water allocation. The legal action follows unsuccessful negotiations led by Joe Lombardo, which have resulted in the federal government planning to slash Nevada’s water share by a significant 71 percent in the forthcoming years. This development comes as residents of Nevada are already grappling with increasing water shortages and escalating utility expenses.
Lombardo’s focus appears to have shifted towards supporting his affluent acquaintances, as he referred to the burgeoning industry of data centers as a “gold rush.” This sector, however, is exacerbating the state’s water scarcity issues. In addition, Lombardo has amassed over $2 million from donors supportive of data centers and artificial intelligence, which has contributed to the increased financial burden on Nevadans.
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Kate Sosland issued a statement regarding the situation:
“Nevada being forced to give up a sixth of our water allotment from the Colorado River is yet another example of Joe Lombardo’s ‘direct line’ to Donald Trump failing Nevadans. Our state is already facing severe water shortages and instead of standing up to the Trump administration to save Nevada’s water access, Lombardo is too busy championing water guzzling data centers.”
