Exploring Reforestation: Insights from Sweden to Transform Northern Arizona
In an effort to rejuvenate forests devastated by drought and fires, a unique collaboration is set to bring Swedish reforestation expertise to northern Arizona. Kristen Waring, a professor specializing in silviculture and applied forest health at Northern Arizona University (NAU), is gearing up for an invaluable research journey to Sweden, thanks to a prestigious Fulbright Research Award.
Waring will spend the 2026-27 academic year at the Swedish Forest Research Institute’s Svalöv office. Over nine months, she aims to assess Sweden’s forestry strategies, particularly in regenerating forests impacted by harsh environmental conditions, to enhance similar efforts in and around Flagstaff.
“Planted seedling survival is often lower here than needed in post-fire environments,” Waring stated. Her goal in Sweden is to “learn from their strategies and experiences as well as compare outcomes and drivers.”
Waring emphasizes the complexity and expense of planting seedlings, which necessitates understanding the conditions that ensure their survival. Through collaboration with Swedish forest scientists, she seeks to identify factors that promote successful seedling growth.
“Comparing planting success rates and contributing factors across diverse regions may provide insights key to increasing success in future projects by identifying common challenges and successful strategies,” Waring explained. The project’s focus is on bolstering forest resilience by understanding climate-related factors that influence seedling success post-disturbance.
By examining the interplay between climate and seedling vitality in Sweden, Waring plans to draw parallels with the American Southwest’s conditions. This comparative analysis will guide her in formulating recommendations to boost reforestation success on both continents.
Achieving robust seedling survival rates is crucial for sustaining future forests and optimizing resource use, as Waring noted. Her research promises to offer valuable insights into effective reforestation strategies, ensuring forests can thrive amid environmental challenges.
