Birdwood stands as a testament to the intricate tapestry of history, bridging the University’s storied past with its evolving present and future. Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis, who serves as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the University, expressed gratitude towards UVA’s Board of Visitors and the UVA Foundation board members, acknowledging their stewardship of Birdwood since the 1980s.

Daniel Abramson, Chair of the UVA Foundation, emphasized the dedication to preserving Birdwood Mansion’s historical essence. He stated, “Throughout this effort, there has been a commitment not only to preserving the historic physical nature of the Birdwood Mansion, but also to ensure that its full history is understood and shared.” This includes a solemn recognition of the enslaved individuals and families whose lives are intricately woven into the property’s history.
