Maricopa County’s Strategic Budget and Innovative Programs
Maricopa County is steering its financial priorities toward public safety and taxpayer relief with a newly approved budget for fiscal year 2027. The county continues its tradition of fiscal prudence by reducing the overall tax rate for the sixth consecutive year, while maintaining essential services despite flat or reduced departmental budgets. The county’s tax levy remains below the maximum at $278.4 million. Two significant pilot programs have been earmarked for funding, focusing on mental health treatment and eviction diversion.
Initiatives for Mental Health and Eviction Prevention
Chair Kate Brophy McGee has prioritized initiatives to improve access to mental health treatment and prevent evictions. In collaboration with President Judge Pam Gates, efforts are underway to streamline courtroom access for individuals with serious mental illnesses. The aim is to increase the availability of treatment beds, preventing the common issue of patients ‘timing out’ after 72 hours due to lack of placement options, which currently affects approximately 80 individuals monthly. Virtual court options and partnerships with Valleywise Hospital and Mercy Care are part of the strategy to enhance treatment accessibility.
In response to over 80,000 annual eviction filings in Maricopa County, a new eviction diversion program has been formed in partnership with Supervisor Gallardo and City of Phoenix Vice Mayor Keisha Hodge Washington. This initiative focuses on addressing delinquencies often caused by one-time financial setbacks, such as illness or vehicle issues, by working with tenants and landlords to resolve cases before they reach court.
Framework 2040: A Blueprint for Growth and Development
The Maricopa County Board has endorsed Framework 2040, an updated comprehensive plan guiding growth in unincorporated areas through 2040. This plan serves as a crucial tool for assessing development proposals, ensuring they align with infrastructure capabilities and contribute positively to quality of life. Key areas addressed include land use, transportation, housing, and economic opportunities. For more details, visit the Planning and Development website.
