In an effort to find new homes for wild horses and burros, the Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Corrections (NNCC) are organizing a special event. Scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2026, this adoption event will take place at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.
This unique event will feature up to 17 saddle-started wild horses and two wild burros, all trained by inmates at the NNCC. Originating from herd management areas in Nevada and Oregon, these animals range from three to seven years old, with diverse weights and colors. Each animal has undergone a minimum of 120 days of training through this inmate program.
“NNCC continues to do a great job training and showcasing these animals,” said Ruth Thompson, BLM Nevada Wild Horse and Burro State Lead. “I am excited for the upcoming saddle trained adoption event. The horses and burro are coming along well with their training.”

Located at 1721 Snyder Avenue, south of Carson City, Nevada, the NNCC will open its doors for public viewing at 9:00 a.m. The adoption event, following at 10:00 a.m., will be conducted through a competitive-bid process led by an auctioneer, with starting bids set at $150 for all animals.
Adopters are requested to enter the facility from the north side and follow signs and event personnel directing them to the horse corrals and parking areas at the southern end of the facility. Note that the use of cell phones, cameras, recording devices, or any form of tobacco is prohibited unless previously approved.
Directions to NNCC:
- From Minden: Take U.S. 395 North (Carson Street). Turn right on Snyder Avenue (NV State Route 518) and head east for 1.5 miles. Turn right (south) at the NNCC sign and follow directional signs at the far south end of the facility.
- From Reno: Take I-580 South to South Carson Street and turn North (right). Turn right on Snyder Avenue (NV State Route 518) and head east for 1.5 miles. Turn right (south) at the NNCC sign and follow directional signs at the far south end of the facility.
