Discover the Legacy of the American West at Freedom 250 Trail Days
Elko, NV. — In a celebration of history and heritage, the Bureau of Land Management’s California Trail Interpretive Center is hosting Freedom 250 Trail Days. This immersive two-day event, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, will take place on June 6–7, 2026, at the center located in Elko, Nevada.
The annual Trail Days event is a beloved tradition that vividly brings the era of westward expansion to life. This year, the official Freedom 250 program introduces innovative presentations and hands-on experiences to honor the themes of independence, perseverance, and community. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage with interpreters and explore a frontier town alive with the diverse cultures and voices that contributed to the development of the Great American West.
Visitors will be treated to performances by Basque youth dancers, Owyhee drummers and dancers, along with live music. The celebration includes Dutch oven cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts workshops, and educational sessions on Indigenous life and pioneer reenactments. Participants can also enjoy a variety of activities such as pioneer games, sack races, axe throwing, watermelon eating contests, gold panning, period gun fights, and “Laura Ingalls Wilder” reenactments. Special appearances by Freedom the wild horse and Liberty the wild burro add to the festivities.
