Israel Targets Houthi Rebels in Yemen, Disables Sanaa Airport

Escalating Tensions: Israel Targets Houthi Rebels in Yemen

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, the Israeli military confirmed on Tuesday that it has conducted airstrikes against Iranian-supported Houthi rebels in Yemen, critically damaging Sanaa’s international airport. This aggressive move follows a series of retaliatory strikes initiated by Israel after a Houthi missile landed near Israel’s main international airport.

Reports from al-Masirah, the Houthi-affiliated satellite news channel, corroborated the strikes, indicating that not only the airport but also several power plants were affected. Visuals broadcasted on Israeli television depicted thick smoke billowing over Sanaa, with social media footage capturing the extent of the blasts echoing throughout the mountainous area.

Despite the magnitude of the strikes, there has been no immediate report on casualties. Prior to the attack, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued a stark warning via social media, urging civilians to evacuate the airport vicinity to ensure their safety.

Defense Minister Israel Katz characterized the strike as a direct message to Iran, calling it the “head of the Iranian octopus,” and holding it accountable for the Houthi’s aggressive actions against Israel.

Monday’s military operations by Israel targeted the Houthi stronghold in Hodeida, resulting in casualties and significant injuries. These strikes were a direct response to Sunday’s missile attack by the Houthis, which had disrupted operations at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, marking a rare breach since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023.

The United States, through its Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed concern over the situation, labeling these exchanges as “grave escalation” and urging restraint from both parties involved.

As the conflict persists, the Houthis continue to assert their solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, positioning themselves as a key player in Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” capable of launching consistent attacks on Israeli targets.

Historically, Israel has executed numerous strikes against Houthi positions, especially following incidents targeting its infrastructure, showcasing a pattern of military responses intended to deter further attacks.
