Exploring the Mysteries and Adventures of Cats Through Picture Books

With their mysterious demeanor and unpredictable nature, cats have long fascinated humans, inspiring countless philosophical musings. Cats are a paradox, at times affectionate and aloof, friendly and disdainful. Four picture books explore these enigmatic creatures, each offering a unique take on the adventures and quirks of cats, both real and imaginary.

“I Have Three Cats …” by Michelle Sumovich, illustrated by Laura Park

(Ages 4-8. Dial Books. $18.99.)

In a household already bustling with three cats, the unexpected arrival of a fourth feline—a scruffy, flea-bitten stray—doesn’t impress the young girl living there. She even creates a sign that reads, “Found! Terrible cat. Come and get her.” However, she finds herself softening, first feeding the cat, then bathing it, and ultimately missing it when it disappears. Children will delight in discovering how this uninvited guest becomes a cherished part of the family.

“Pavlo Gets the Grumps” by Natalia Shaloshvili

(Ages 3-7. Candlewick. $17.99.)

Pavlo, a kitten with a bad case of the grumps, finds nothing appealing in Mama cat’s suggestions for fun. The park, swings, and slides all seem unappealing to him. Young readers might recognize their own moods in Pavlo’s reluctance to enjoy the day, learning alongside him the value of venturing out to share time with family and friends, even when feeling grumpy.

“Lost” by Bob Staake

(Ages 3-7. Anne Schwartz Books. $18.99.)

Bob Staake’s nearly wordless book portrays the journey of a lost cat and the girl’s relentless search to bring her beloved pet back home. As the girl encounters others who are also seeking their pets, Staake’s distinctive grayscale illustrations paired with strategic bursts of color emphasize the warmth pets bring to our lives. The story unfolds in a charming and visually captivating way, ultimately leading to a heartwarming reunion.

“Squash, the Cat: Stuck in the Middle” by Sasha Mayer

(Ages 4-8. Random House Studio. $18.99.)

Squash, an amiable cat who adores cuddles and naps, faces a challenge when Pirate Lou, a pesky pillow, disrupts his bond with his human friend, Maggie. In a series of humorous misadventures, Squash’s attempts to rid himself of Pirate Lou go awry, prompting him to reconsider the dynamics of his relationships. Ultimately, Squash learns that there is room for both Maggie and Pirate Lou in his life, a realization that enriches his world.
