Delaware County’s Holiday Efforts Bring Joy to Those in Need

During the festive season, generosity and community spirit are more important than ever, especially for those facing hardships. In Delaware County, initiatives to support families in need are bringing warmth and hope, highlighting the community’s dedication to compassion and support. By offering kindness, these efforts help alleviate stress and reinforce the ties that bind residents together.

Several Delaware County departments are spearheading initiatives to collect essential items for those in need. Key players include the Delaware County Park Police, led by Chief John Deihl, the Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Jerry L. Sanders, Jr., and the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs headed by COL Arthur L. Jenkins. These groups are working together to make sure everyone enjoys the holiday season.

Delaware County Park Police: Blue Christmas Toy Drive

The Delaware County Park Police have initiated their 9th annual “Blue Christmas” Toy Drive, aiming to bring holiday cheer to children in need.

Until December 22, donations of new, unwrapped toys for children aged 2–16 are welcomed. These gifts will go to families facing challenges, including children in foster care and those with illnesses.

“Every child who celebrates should have a reason to smile on Christmas morning,” noted James Neff, President of the Delaware County Park Police Independent Union. “The holidays can be especially tough for some families, but even a small gift can bring joy and let these children know their community is here for them.”

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office: Sassy Massey Toy Drive

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the 9th Annual Sassy Massey Toy Drive, honoring Jillian Massey, a brave 5-year-old who continues to inspire joy among children undergoing cancer treatment.

This drive is a chance for the community to uplift children facing difficulties, ensuring they feel supported during the holidays.

Unwrapped gifts can be donated until Thursday, December 12 at 4:30 p.m.

Department of Military and Veterans Affairs: Holiday Toys, Food + Clothing Drive

The Delaware County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, in collaboration with the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association, is hosting their annual Holiday Toy, Food, and Clothing Drive.

Date: Saturday, December 7, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Location: Delaware County Veterans Memorial, 4599 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA.

This event encourages donations of non-perishable food, new toys, clothing, and pet supplies, benefiting local groups like area food banks, Toys for Tots, Goodwill, and the Brandywine SPCA.

“We’re proud to partner with the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association to support our community during the holiday season,” stated Col. Arthur Jenkins, Director of the Delaware County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. “This drive is a meaningful way to bring neighbors together to share generosity and hope with those who need it most.”

Additional initiatives across County departments are spreading holiday cheer. The Children and Youth Services Citizen Advisory Committee is donating gifts and gift cards to families in need. Meanwhile, at George W. Hill Correctional Facility, the “Holiday Gift Packaging” program provides care packages for incarcerated individuals.

Delaware County Libraries, led by Director Anny Laepple, are teaming up with the Health Department and Teacher’s Teammates for a Period Poverty Drive starting December 2, to supply free period products to students and teachers.

The County Council extends gratitude to these departments, county offices, organizations, and community members for their contributions, ensuring joy and hope for all residents this holiday season.
