William Massengill Jr. Named NC’s 2024 Community Star for Rural Health

Celebrating Rural Health Champions: William W. Massengill Jr. Honored

As National Rural Health Day approaches on November 21, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Rural Health is set to honor a key figure in rural health advocacy. William W. Massengill Jr., a dedicated advocate for rural health, has been named North Carolina’s 2024 Community Star, as announced by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH).

Since 2015, NOSORH has recognized individuals and organizations making a substantial impact in rural areas across the United States. Massengill’s recognition is a testament to his persistent efforts in enhancing healthcare access in North Carolina’s rural communities. “William has been a tireless advocate for improving access to care in rural and underserved areas across our state,” stated Maggie Sauer, Director of NCDHHS Office of Rural Health. “Through his decades of service through nonprofit and advocacy work, William has been a true champion for our rural communities. We are excited to celebrate his recognition.”

Massengill’s leadership as the former CEO of Benson Health, a CMS-designated Rural Health Clinic, has spanned 27 years, during which he has shown a steadfast commitment to his community’s health. His strategic coordination with state and local partners during the COVID-19 pandemic was crucial in maintaining essential healthcare services at Benson Health. His continued advocacy and commitment to providing high-quality care to all residents, regardless of their financial situation, earned Benson Health the State Designated Rural Health Center of the Year award in 2023.

Beyond his role in healthcare, Massengill has contributed to his community as Benson’s mayor for a decade and was recognized as Johnston County Citizen of the Year in 2018. His involvement extends to serving on the board of UNC Health Johnston, further influencing the healthcare landscape in the region.
