Parole Update for Curtis L. Roy: New Release Date Set for 2024

Parole Update for Curtis L. Roy’s Case

In a recent development concerning the parole process, the state Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission has announced a significant update regarding Curtis L. Roy, who has been serving a life sentence since his conviction on November 5, 1990, for second-degree murder in Granville County Superior Court.

Curtis L. Roy’s case was approved for parole through the Mutual Agreement Parole Program (MAPP) on February 17, 2022. MAPP is a collaborative program involving the Commission, the Division of Prisons, and the offender, focusing on educational and vocational training as part of the rehabilitation process. The Commission has recently modified Roy’s MAPP agreement, adjusting his scheduled parole release to February 5, 2024.

The Structured Sentencing law, which came into effect on October 1, 1994, abolished parole for offenses committed after that date. However, the Commission remains tasked with overseeing parole for individuals sentenced under earlier guidelines, like Roy.
