North Carolina Launches Initiative to Tackle Problem Gambling
The issue of problem gambling is drawing increased focus in North Carolina, as the Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) joins forces with East Carolina University (ECU) to explore its effects on individuals and communities. This collaboration aims to shed light on gambling addiction, particularly among historically marginalized and understudied groups.
NCDHHS and ECU’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology are set to mark the beginning of the Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) with an inaugural event. This ceremony will occur on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at ECU’s Brewster Building. The event will feature representatives from key organizations like the NC Education Lottery, Birches Health, and Telus Health.
The concept of problem gambling encompasses any gambling behavior that negatively impacts a person’s life or the lives of those around them, including family and friends. To address this issue, NCDHHS runs the North Carolina Problem Gambling Program, offering resources to help individuals manage or stop their gambling activities.
