N.C. Treasurer’s Office Wins 2026 Award for Financial Literacy Efforts

North Carolina Department of State Treasurer Lauded for Excellence in Financial Education

The N.C. Department of State Treasurer (DST) has been recognized nationally for its impactful contributions to financial education. The Institute for Financial Literacy (IFL) has awarded DST the prestigious 2026 Government Organization of the Year title, noting its significant advances in educating the public through initiatives like the “Finance Fridays With the Treasurer” newsletter.

The IFL presented this accolade at its 20th Annual Conference on Financial Education held on April 13. Rachel Gordon, the Executive Director of IFL, praised DST’s dedication, saying, “Your nomination reflected exceptional commitment, leadership and impact.” This acknowledgment highlights the innovative efforts of State Treasurer Brad Briner, whose administration prioritized the launch of the newsletter in April 2025 as a key component of its financial literacy agenda.

State Treasurer Brad Briner remarked on the importance of the award, stating, “This recognition underscores our mission to empower North Carolinians with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed financial decisions.” He emphasized that Finance Fridays is central to promoting long-term economic stability and opportunity through financial literacy.

The newsletter is crafted to offer North Carolinians straightforward, practical advice on personal finance management. Covering a wide range of topics, such as budgeting, savings, retirement planning, and debt management, Finance Fridays is a vital resource for individuals and families striving to secure their financial futures.

Since its inception, the newsletter has amassed thousands of subscribers statewide, delivering clear, actionable insights in a user-friendly format. This initiative is part of DST’s broader strategy to enhance financial well-being and support communities through educational outreach.

The IFL’s EIFLE Awards annually honor “innovation, dedication and the commitment of individuals and organizations that support financial literacy education worldwide.” This year’s awardees included a book by CNBC’s “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer, alongside other nominees from South Africa, the Czech Republic, and Canada.
