The Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) are fostering a strong connection with the community through an innovative approach to STEM education. A highlight of these efforts is the STEM Saturday series, a collaborative initiative with the Atomic Museum and the Clark County School District Career and Technical Education. This monthly event, held during the academic year, invites community members to engage with NNSS STEM professionals.
The 2024-2025 season was a success, drawing 588 attendees who explored a variety of STEM topics. September’s session focused on thermal imaging, laser interferometry, and fiber optics, while October delved into drones and autonomous systems. November brought insights into fire and rescue operations, and the series continued with meteorology in January, geology and seismology in February, occupational medicine in March, and concluded with the Nevada Space Proving Grounds in April.

STEM Saturdays have been a pivotal element in engaging the local community, reaching thousands since they started. The program also collaborates with other STEM-centered groups. For instance, during an event on April 5, members from the Nevada Flight Crew joined to discuss how access to STEM has shaped their education and career goals. Students from the After-School All-Stars program in Las Vegas, which offers educational opportunities for at-risk youth, were also present.
“STEM Saturdays have become a fixture for how local youth connect to STEM and the NNSS,” stated NNSS Outreach Coordinator Brianna Majdanac. “It’s especially exciting to watch students and families alike draw connections between STEM principles in the classroom and the exciting career path it can lead to — right here in Nevada! That direct engagement with an NNSS mathematician, scientist, doctor, firefighter or any of our STEM professionals is invaluable.”
The NNSS is also sponsoring the Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival Giant Expo, where STEM excellence will be showcased. This event, scheduled for Saturday, May 3, features unique demonstrations by NNSS personnel and other STEM exhibitors from Southern Nevada. Entry is free, and interested individuals can RSVP here!
