In a bid to foster a love for reading among young students, 14 dedicated volunteers from the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) participated in classroom activities during Nevada Reading Week, held from March 3 to 7. This annual event has been a cornerstone of educational outreach in Nevada for over four decades.
This year’s theme, “Color Our World with Books,” aimed to ignite the imagination of students and emphasize the significance of reading. Each NNSS volunteer chose two books to share with elementary students at Helen Anderson Toland International Academy in North Las Vegas, a school known for its focus on STEM education and a partner of the NNSS.
Christi Lee, an NNSS Environmental, Safety & Health Business Specialist, reflected on her experience, saying, “My favorite part of connecting with the community through outreach events is showing the community — and in this case, students — that others care about their education, well-being and are vested in their success, too.” Lee, who has been a volunteer for Nevada Reading Week for two years, highlighted the importance of diverse voices in promoting education. “I think it’s important they hear, see and engage with this message from as many different messengers as possible. Reading and STEM can open a world of opportunities for students that they may not even know exist,” she added.
