CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public feedback regarding the proposed Lahontan Wild Horse Gather Plan, which aims to address the overpopulation of wild horses in the Lahontan Herd Management Area. This region spans 304,705 acres across Lyon and Churchill counties, situated approximately 40 miles east of Carson City, Nevada. The BLM invites public comments from December 11, 2024, to January 10, 2025.
Earlier in 2024, the BLM conducted aerial surveys to assess the wild horse population in the area. The findings indicate a total of 518 wild horses, a number that exceeds the designated appropriate management level. To address this, the BLM proposes the gathering and removal of surplus horses from the Lahontan HMA to achieve a sustainable population size.
“The BLM’s priority is to conduct a safe, efficient, and successful horse gather operation while ensuring humane care and treatment of all animals gathered,” explained Sierra Front Acting Field Office Manager Paul Fuselier.
The BLM encourages the submission of comments through the “Participate Now” feature on the BLM National NEPA Register available at this link. Alternatively, comments can be sent to the BLM Carson City District Office at 5665 Morgan Mill Road, Carson City, NV 89701, or faxed to (775)-885-6147. All written comments should be postmarked or delivered by 4:30 p.m. on or before January 16, 2025. For questions or accessibility issues, please email blm nv [email protected].
