Lafayette Coney Island Reopens After Addressing Health Concerns
Following a period of voluntary closure, Lafayette Coney Island is once again welcoming diners. The establishment took significant steps to improve its health and safety standards, leading to a successful inspection by the Detroit Health Department.
On January 24, Lafayette Coney Island made the decision to close temporarily due to a rodent infestation and related hygiene issues. After taking corrective actions, the restaurant passed a thorough inspection on March 3 and reopened its doors on March 4, after final preparations with Health Department staff.
Denise Fair Razo, Chief Public Health Officer, explained the proactive measures the restaurant undertook during its closure. The collaborative effort between Lafayette Coney Island and the Detroit Health Department ensured that the dining environment met all required safety standards.
In an effort to maintain this level of safety across the city, the Detroit Health Department has outlined initiatives aimed at sustaining high cleanliness and safety standards for all local eateries. These include the Dining with Confidence Ordinance, effective October 1, 2024, which promotes transparency in restaurant inspection results through a public placard system. To date, over 1,000 restaurants have earned a Green Placard for their excellence in food safety.
Detroit Health Department’s Safety Initiatives
Dining with Confidence Ordinance: This ordinance encourages restaurants to rectify violations and publicly display their inspection results. It has been instrumental in boosting public confidence and ensuring safety compliance across Detroit eateries.
Routine Inspections: Regular inspections are conducted every 6 to 12 months to assess compliance with food safety standards. These visits also serve as an educational opportunity for restaurant managers and staff.
Progressive Enforcement: Restaurants that fail to address significant violations are subject to progressive measures to ensure public health protection.
City Councilmember Scott Benson remarked on the importance of such initiatives, stating, “One of the reasons we worked extensively with our restaurant community on the Dining with Confidence placard program was to instill not only confidence in the dining public about the cleanliness and food safety of our restaurants, but also to ensure that our eateries work with the Detroit Health Department if they have trouble complying with the health code.”

Staff Training: Comprehensive training on food safety and sanitation practices has been completed for all staff, ensuring a knowledgeable team dedicated to maintaining a safe dining environment.
Repairs to Prevent Pests: Structural repairs were made to eliminate entry points for pests, reinforcing the restaurant’s commitment to a pest-free setting.
Cleaning Protocols: Enhanced cleaning routines have been implemented, encompassing daily and weekly schedules to uphold sanitation standards.
