Detroit City Services: Holiday Schedule and Operations Update

As the festive season approaches, many City of Detroit offices will observe a temporary closure starting Tuesday, December 24, 2024, and will resume operations on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Essential services such as police, fire, and bus services will continue uninterrupted. Here’s a detailed look at how different departments will operate during the holidays.

Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will halt refuse, recycling, and bulk item collection services on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Instead, collections will occur a day later than usual for both weeks, with Friday’s collections happening on Saturday.

Parking Department

The Ford Underground Garage and Eastern Market Garage will have specific closure days: December 25, 28, and 31, and January 1 for the Ford Underground Garage; and December 24-25 and 31, and January 1 for the Eastern Market Garage. Parking meter enforcement will be suspended from December 23 through January 1, except in Residential Parking Zones, encouraging residents to support local businesses during the break.

The People Mover will maintain regular hours throughout December, except for closures on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to midnight, Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Notable exceptions include Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and New Year’s Eve from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
