Barry-Eaton Health Dept Promotes STI Awareness and Prevention Efforts

September 11, 2024

The onset of September marks Sexual Health Awareness Month, and the Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) is taking significant steps to promote awareness regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Their aim is to dismantle stigma and discrimination while equipping individuals with the essential knowledge and resources for prevention, testing, and treatment.

In Michigan, sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis are notably prevalent. The year 2023 saw around 52,000 Michiganders diagnosed with reportable STIs, including 591 cases specifically within the Barry-Eaton area. Fortunately, with proper education, timely testing, and access to resources, STIs can be both prevented and treated.

BEDHD offers a variety of FREE (and reduced cost) resources designed to empower individuals in managing their sexual health:

STI Testing

BEDHD provides low-cost and confidential STI testing services. Early detection and treatment are crucial for preventing further transmission and complications, allowing individuals to take control of their sexual health by knowing their status.

Wear One Program

Condoms are an effective tool in curbing the spread of STIs, including HIV. Through the Wear One Program, BEDHD distributes free condoms at its locations and participating sites throughout Barry and Eaton Counties. Additional locations participating in the Wear One Program can be found at org/wear-one.

Vaccination

Vaccines play a crucial role in preventing certain STIs, such as Human Papillomavirus (HPV), as well as Hepatitis A and B. BEDHD offers these vaccines either for free or at a reduced cost, ensuring that protection is accessible to all.
