FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Fort Lauderdale man has been sentenced to three years in prison for masterminding a scheme that defrauded the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through the submission of fraudulent tax returns.
Jean Volvick Moise, aged 39, admitted to preparing and filing false income tax returns on behalf of his clients, which resulted in excessive refunds. These inflated refunds were achieved through the manipulation of tax return information, including fictitious dependents, fabricated Form 1099 withholdings, non-existent educational credits, and false Schedule C business expenses for businesses that did not exist. Moise’s charges for these services exceeded typical tax preparation fees. The scheme led the IRS to disburse over $574,000 in unwarranted refunds.
The announcement of Moise’s sentencing was made by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Acting Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Hipkins of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS CI), Miami Field Office.
The investigation into the fraudulent activities was carried out by the IRS CI, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bertha R. Mitrani.
