In a significant legal development in Miami, two individuals from Fort Pierce were handed prison sentences on December 4th, following their involvement in gun and drug-related activities, as ruled by Senior U.S. District Judge Donald L. Graham.
Joseph Acevedo, aged 40, received a sentence of 101 months in federal prison and will undergo four years of supervised release thereafter.
Stanley Rumowski, aged 49, was sentenced to 96 months in prison and will be subject to three years of supervised release. Additionally, Rumowski has been ordered to pay an estimated fine of $20,000.
The convictions stem from a July 18th decision by a jury in Fort Pierce, which found both men guilty of cocaine trafficking. Rumowski was also charged with firearm possession during the drug trafficking incident. The trial revealed that Acevedo and Rumowski were partners in a struggling marijuana cultivation enterprise. Their legal troubles began when they were stopped by Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies while returning from Miami to Fort Pierce. A canine search of their vehicle unveiled a loaded firearm and around half a kilogram of cocaine. Text message evidence during the trial confirmed their intent to possess and distribute the cocaine.
The announcement of this verdict was made by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida, along with Anthony Salisbury, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Miami Field Office, and Sheriff William D. Snyder of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The case was meticulously investigated by HSI Fort Pierce, with critical support from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Breezye Telfair.
