Villanova and Global Philadelphia Unveil Mural for UN SDG 12 Initiative

Villanova University Collaborates with Global Philadelphia for Sustainable Art Initiative

Villanova, Pa. (November 13, 2024)— In a vibrant display of art and advocacy, Villanova University, in collaboration with the Global Philadelphia Association, has revealed a mural that celebrates the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, focusing on Responsible Consumption and Production. The artwork, strategically placed on the Connelly Center’s exterior, is part of a broader initiative comprising 17 murals throughout Philadelphia. These murals aim to foster public awareness and dialogue regarding sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

The creative force behind the mural is Maggie Hobson-Baker, MFA, a faculty member at Villanova and a renowned artist based in Philadelphia. Her work on this mural highlights humanity’s role as caretakers of the planet, stressing the vital connection between individuals and the environment. This artistic endeavor is a call to action for sustainable behavior on campus and beyond.

In conjunction with the mural’s unveiling, a grant was awarded to Martha’s Choice Marketplace & Community Farm, the largest food pantry in Montgomery County. This grant will aid their mission of distributing over two million pounds of food annually to more than 15,000 people, tackling food insecurity while promoting sustainable consumption.
