Exploring Nontraditional Media with TikTok Sensation V Spehar at Lehigh University
Lehigh University will host V Spehar, the popular face behind Under the Desk News on TikTok, as they join the Compelling Perspectives series on February 6, 2025. This event, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Zoellner Arts Center, promises an engaging discussion on the evolving landscape of media.
University President Joseph J. Helble ’82 will engage with Spehar in a conversation that delves into the influence of nontraditional media in today’s society. The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A, inviting the audience to participate.
The rise of nontraditional media—spanning digital platforms, social media, and more—has significantly altered how audiences consume information globally. While these channels offer diverse content and perspectives, they also present challenges such as misinformation and navigating complex algorithm-driven placements.
V Spehar, based in Rochester, has become a notable figure in this space. As a citizen journalist and podcaster, Spehar has amassed over 3 million followers on TikTok by delivering concise news recaps. Their project, Under the Desk News, began in April 2020 and quickly gained popularity for its accessible and bipartisan news coverage.
In 2022, Spehar expanded their repertoire with the podcast “V Interesting,” which explores topics with original reporting, including Gen Z voter engagement. This podcast has received recognition from GLAAD for its contribution to LGBTQ+ cultural change. Spehar’s work has taken them to prestigious events like the State of the Union press room and hosting duties for NBC’s live stream of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “V Interesting” was among the top 10 news podcasts upon its launch and continues to rank in the top 25.
Spehar’s achievements include a Webby Special Achievement Award in 2023 for their impactful reporting style. Their participation in the Compelling Perspectives series follows previous discussions on media’s role featuring renowned journalists Katie Couric and Marty Baron.
Those interested in attending Spehar’s lecture must register in advance. Due to limited seating, registration is encouraged by January 28 to ensure a spot.
