University of Iowa to Close Diversity Division, Realign Key Functions

The University of Iowa is set to dissolve its Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity (DAOD) on March 27, adhering to directives from the Iowa Board of Regents. This move aligns with the institution’s efforts to comply with both state and federal legislation, as well as new accreditation standards across various fields.

Reassignment of Essential Units

Several units within the DAOD that are mandated by law will be reassigned to different areas within the university:

  • The Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC) will now fall under the jurisdiction of the associate vice president for administrative affairs in the Office of the President. This restructuring aims to preserve the OCRC’s key functions while enhancing efficiency through collaboration with UI Human Resources.
  • The TRIO Student Support Services and the TRIO Upward Bound program will be integrated into the University College within the Office of the Provost.

Changes and Closures

Programs not required by law will face elimination or review:

  • On March 27, the training department within the Office of Access and Support will cease operations.
  • The university plans to evaluate and adjust student support programs to ensure they comply with state law as they transition to University College.

Impact on Employment

The closure of DAOD will result in the reassignment of three employees, while one position will be eliminated, leading to a furlough. Since last spring, the university has cut 12 full-time positions to adhere to the directives from the Iowa Board of Regents and state legislation.

Continued Access to Resources

Despite these organizational shifts, the University of Iowa community will continue to have access to various important resources. Students and employees requiring services are advised to contact the appropriate offices. Additionally, any inquiries or concerns regarding ADA compliance, Title IX, sexual misconduct, and employment issues should be directed to the Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC).
