Turmoil and Triumph: A Year in Review at Temple University
Temple University has experienced a whirlwind of events over the past academic year, from significant political activities to sports achievements and leadership transformations. These events have shaped the landscape of the institution and its community.
Protests and Arrests
In September, a protest organized by Temple Students Justice for Palestine took place at the College of Engineering’s fall career and internship fair. The demonstration, aimed at opposing the participation of defense contractors and weapons manufacturers in the Israel-Hamas conflict, led to the arrest of four protestors, including one student. They were subsequently released without charges, though the SJP was placed on interim suspension.
Anniversary of Resistance
The activism continued in October when Temple’s SJP joined forces with other pro-Palestine groups from Philadelphia universities. They convened at Drexel Square Park to mark the one-year anniversary since the initial Hamas attack and demonstrated solidarity in their cause.
Political Tensions and Election Results
November saw the peak of political tension with the presidential election. Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, delivered a final campaign speech on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but ultimately lost to President Donald Trump.
Sports and Leadership Changes
December brought a shift in leadership for Temple’s football team with the hiring of K.C. Keeler as head coach, following the dismissal of Stan Drayton. Known for his impressive record, Keeler aimed to elevate the team’s performance.
Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team faced a challenging season in January, despite guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. emerging as the nation’s second leading scorer. Unfortunately, the team missed an NCAA berth for the sixth consecutive year.
Celebrations and Community Engagement
February was a time of celebration as the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the Super Bowl title. The Temple community joined in the festivities, with the university closing for the Eagles Super Bowl Parade.
Student Leadership and Future Plans
In March, Lourdes Cardomone and Janeese Hochstetler were elected to lead the Temple Student Government, having previously served as the chief of external affairs and deputy chief of communications, respectively. April saw the official inauguration of John Fry as Temple’s president. Fry, formerly of Drexel, outlined ambitious development plans, including new construction projects and fostering stronger ties with North Philadelphia.
