North Carolina high school students are on the brink of new and exciting career opportunities in the rapidly expanding field of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), thanks to a groundbreaking program. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and Zipline, the world leader in autonomous delivery services.
The need for skilled UAS operators and flight professionals is increasing, and this unique partnership offers an innovative pathway for students aiming for professional careers at Zipline. To be eligible, students must complete high school, succeed in the UAS pathway program, maintain the required GPA, and submit a faculty recommendation letter.
Trey Michael, NCDPI’s Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE), highlighted the program’s significance: “The goal of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in North Carolina is to open doors to successful and fulfilling careers for our students through exposure and helping them develop academic, technical and durable skills to use in the workplace.” He emphasized that the partnership equips students for a burgeoning global industry.
Set to launch in the 2024-25 academic year, this program will be accessible in over 60 high schools throughout North Carolina. These schools, which offer drone technology courses, will cover essential topics such as drone basics, legal standards, simulations, flight training, and mapping. Upon completion, students are guaranteed an interview with Zipline.
Joseph Marshall, Zipline’s Director of Flight Operations, shared his enthusiasm for the program: “Zipline and NCDPI have set essential program requirements that will offer high school graduates cutting-edge aviation opportunities right after graduation. We are confident that the pathway program will attract exceptional candidates and contribute to the advancement of the UAS industry.”
This initiative paves the way for graduates to enter a dynamic and rapidly growing sector. As the UAS industry progresses, the partnership between NCDPI and Zipline is poised to significantly impact the career trajectories of aspiring young professionals.
