Financial Support Brightens Graduation Path at Iowa State University
In Ames, Iowa, as students gear up for the fall 2023 commencement at Iowa State University, many are celebrating not just their academic achievements but also the financial assistance that made this moment possible. The university’s completion grants have played a crucial role in ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of students reaching this significant milestone.
Since its inception five years ago, Iowa State University has distributed $3 million in completion grants to over 1,500 students. These grants come from the First Scholars Office, an initiative aligned with the university’s strategic plan, and they cover essential expenses such as tuition, books, housing, transportation, and emergencies.
These grants have been transformative for many students, evidenced by numerous expressions of gratitude received by the First Scholars Office. One student noted, “Without this grant, I likely would’ve had to move back home with nothing to show for my time at Iowa State. I am the oldest of 3 siblings, of which 2 of us are currently in university…Having received this grant has not only ensured that I graduate on time but also that there’s enough financial resources for my siblings as well. I will eternally be grateful for having received this amazing opportunity.”
Giving Back: Caps and Gowns Initiative
In addition to financial grants, the university is fostering a culture of giving back. First-generation students participating in the fall commencement will benefit from free academic caps and gowns, thanks to donations from past graduates. Students are encouraged to donate their used regalia at designated bins at Hilton Coliseum or use postage-paid envelopes to mail them later.
Celebrating Academic Success
The upcoming commencement ceremonies at Hilton Coliseum on Dec. 20-21 will honor the achievements of Iowa State’s graduates. On Dec. 21, approximately 1,408 bachelor’s degree recipients will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., while the previous evening will recognize an estimated 245 master’s and 110 doctoral graduates. For those unable to attend, a livestream will be available.
Inspiring Words from Esteemed Speakers
Two distinguished speakers will address the graduates. Kimberly Ryan, president and CEO of Hillenbrand, Inc., who graduated from Iowa State in 1989, will speak at the undergraduate ceremony. As a student, Ryan was actively involved in various campus organizations and has been contributing to the Ivy College of Business as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council since 2022.
For the graduate ceremony, Robert C. Brown, a distinguished professor in engineering and co-director of ISU’s Bioeconomy Institute, will share his insights. Brown’s work focuses on advanced biofuels and sustainable energy solutions, including the recent establishment of a brewing science program at the university.
