Drake University Launches New Sports Media and Communication Major

Drake University Launches Innovative Sports Media and Communication Major

As the demand for sports media professionals continues to rise, Drake University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) is stepping up to meet this need with a new Sports Media and Communication major launching in the fall of 2025. This program will leverage the university’s Division 1 athletics and local professional sports connections to provide students with unparalleled learning opportunities.

“Students who engage in our School of Journalism and Mass Communication have long benefited from the practical experience that comes with attending college in a bustling yet accessible metro area like Des Moines,” noted Catherine Staub, Ed.D, dean of the SJMC. “Between the growing professional sports presence in Des Moines and the experiential learning opportunities available at Drake—including direct access to our NCAA Division 1 programs and world-renowned Drake Relays—we are offering a unique opportunity to sports-minded students everywhere.”

The Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills to communicate effectively across diverse platforms, focusing on sports-related storytelling and strategic initiatives. Coursework covers sports principles, publicity, promotions, sports reporting, and production. A capstone project is also required, providing students with real-world experience in the sports industry.

Drake’s program sets itself apart by allowing students to begin their sports-focused studies in their first semester. Students can tailor their education with a wide range of classes, preparing them for long-term careers in journalism and communication.

Experienced Faculty, Nationally Recognized School

Heading the program are faculty members with extensive experience in sports journalism, including SJMC’s newest faculty member, David Lubbers, a former investigative producer and writer at ESPN. The curriculum includes practicums and internships with sports teams and media entities, ensuring students gain hands-on experience and establish professional networks. Drake’s SJMC stands out as the only accredited journalism school at a private Midwest institution, with numerous local and national student accolades.

Partnership with Drake Athletics

Through strong collaborations with Drake University Athletics, students can cover Bulldog sports teams and the renowned Drake Relays. Opportunities include promoting athletes and brands, assisting with media relations, engaging in community activities, and participating in brand activations related to the Drake Relays.

Experiential Learning

From their first days on campus, students can join The Times-Delphic and Drake Broadcasting System as sports photographers, reporters, and hosts of sports talk podcasts and radio shows. The program encourages connections with sports organizations and media outlets throughout Des Moines during their time at Drake University.

Opportunities for Future Leaders

Drake’s SJMC will introduce sports media days and a junior reporter program, inviting high school students to engage in sports media events throughout the 2024-25 season. For more information, contact Associate Dean Kelly Bruhn at [email protected].

A virtual spotlight event highlighting SJMC programs is scheduled for November 21 at 6 p.m. Interested individuals can register here.
