Chad Berman Joins Team USA Coaching Staff for World University Games

In a significant achievement for the University of Arizona’s hockey program, Chad Berman, the director of hockey operations and men’s head hockey coach, has earned the position of assistant coach for Team USA. This team will participate in the World University Games in Italy come January.

Joining Berman in this international endeavor are 23 players from the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Among these talented athletes are two student players from the University of Arizona: forwards Riley Ruh and Justin Hughes.

This marks a groundbreaking moment for Arizona Hockey, as it’s the first time a coach from the program has been selected to join Team USA. The team is slated to face off against competitors from countries such as Poland, Japan, Ukraine, and Slovakia.

“It is a great honor to serve as the coach for the team,” remarked Berman, who is currently in his 10th season leading the Wildcats. Berman’s coaching prowess has been acknowledged with two Western Collegiate Hockey League Coach of the Year awards and two nominations for the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s top coaching honor.

Under Berman’s guidance, the Wildcats have distinguished themselves in community service, securing five national ACHA Community Service awards for their efforts.

Looking ahead, Arizona Hockey, which is part of Campus Recreation, will soon have a new base of operations. Next season, they will relocate to the Mosaic Quarter, a versatile sports and entertainment venue situated near Kino Parkway and Interstate 10. This facility will feature the 175,000-square-foot MQ Iceplex, with construction having commenced in November.
