Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has unveiled a new strategic framework designed to maintain its prominence in the evolving landscape of higher education. This roadmap, recently approved by the CMU Board of Trustees, aims to cement the university’s status as a global innovator across research, entrepreneurship, and creative fields.
“This framework, shaped by a multitude of voices across our university community, is designed to fuel Carnegie Mellon University’s persistent pursuit of excellence. It will expand our record of innovating in education, research, creativity and entrepreneurship in our rapidly evolving world,” stated Farnam Jahanian, president of CMU.
Chaired by Tricia O’Reilly and Becky Culyba, a steering committee initiated the framework’s development in 2023. The process encompassed extensive data collection and stakeholder feedback, incorporating insights from 76 focus groups and interviews with faculty, staff, and trustees, as well as a comprehensive environmental scan of higher education trends.
Drawing from this feedback, the updated framework emphasizes leadership and adaptability, focusing on four primary priorities. These include enhancing education and workforce readiness, expanding research frontiers, fostering community engagement, and ensuring institutional resilience.
Priority 1: CMU aims to redefine education and workforce development by integrating human intelligence with AI and learning science, thus preparing its community for a dynamic global economy.
Priority 2: The university plans to broaden research horizons through strategic investments and interdisciplinary initiatives, targeting advancements that can significantly impact society.
Priority 3: CMU seeks to nurture an inclusive community, enhancing the educational experience for students and staff while benefitting global partners in locations such as Qatar, Rwanda, and Portugal.
Priority 4: The focus will be on sustainable resource management, aiming to increase access and opportunities within the university.
James H. Garrett Jr., provost of CMU, reflected on the university’s achievements: “The global recognition of CMU’s research and education impact has surged over the past decade, evidenced by our strong rankings and ever-competitive applicant pool.”
The framework’s progress will be monitored through strategic indicators covering five domains: Excellence in Education, Excellence in Research, Community and Talent, Stewardship of Resources, and Transformational Impacts.
Regular updates and evaluations will be shared with the Board of Trustees and the broader CMU community. The strategic framework website will document these developments, serving as a central hub for achievements and future milestones.
