In celebration of the centennial of the University of Arizona’s iconic motto, “Bear Down,” the institution is reflecting on its historical achievements while looking forward to future “Bear Down” moments.
A dramatic twist unfolded during the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship quarterfinals when Vanderbilt’s Wells Williams delivered an exceptional shot, holing out from 140 yards on the 17th hole. This momentous eagle shifted the tied match in Vanderbilt’s favor, stirring excitement and disbelief among players and fans alike.
For the Arizona Wildcats, the prospect of reaching the NCAA Final Four seemed to be slipping away. Yet, for golfer Zach Pollo, the situation was clear: “There was one more hole,” he stated.
Exactly a century after John “Button” Salmon inspired the University of Arizona with his enduring message, Pollo exemplified the essence of “Bear Down” through his performance.

The Wildcats arrived in Carlsbad, California, buoyed by their impressive showing at the Marana Regional, hosted by The Gallery Golf Club. Their determination and skill led them to their first-ever NCAA match play, setting the stage for a pivotal showdown against Vanderbilt.
As the morning session reached its climax, the score was tied 2-2, with all eyes on the final match featuring Pollo and Williams. Pollo recalled, “I think it was around the 15th hole when Tianyi (Xiong) closed out his match.” The tension was palpable as both teams gathered to watch the decisive moments unfold.
Pollo’s journey to this point reflected a storied career at Arizona, marked by his qualification for the U.S. Open and advancement at the U.S. Amateur, contributing to one of the program’s best seasons.
Best Season in Program History
Under the leadership of head coach Jim Anderson, appointed in 2012, the Wildcats have evolved into a formidable national contender. Anderson’s emphasis on preparation, process, composure, and trust has led to conference championships, All-American honors, and now, the team’s deepest NCAA Championship run.
Golf Channel analyst Steve Burkowski, who covered the match, commented on Arizona’s resilience, stating, “You’ve got to give Jim credit for keeping everyone in the moment.” Even after Williams’ stunning eagle, Arizona remained focused, believing, “We still have a chance.”

Williams’ performance was nothing short of impressive, with critical putts and a timely eagle that seemed to put the match out of reach. However, Pollo’s mental fortitude allowed him to withstand the pressure, a skill honed through rigorous practice.
Anderson, maintaining composure, focused on Pollo after Williams’ eagle, embodying the “Bear Down” spirit he had instilled in his team.
Trust the Process
“We just needed to stay in our bubble,” Anderson advised. “Trust the process and let the results happen.” Pollo answered by winning the 18th hole, forcing a playoff.
The playoff presented a fresh challenge. Both competitors hit excellent approach shots, each missing birdie putts. On the par-4 15th, Pollo faced a difficult shot from hardpan dirt, deliberating over club selection with Anderson. They chose a 58-degree wedge, a decision that paid off with a shot landing four feet from the hole.

With the season on the line, Pollo’s decisive putt secured Arizona’s place in the Final Four. Reflecting on the “Bear Down” motto, Pollo emphasized a collective effort: “Don’t do it for me. Do it for them.”
Pollo’s success was shared with teammates, coaches, and supporters, embodying the spirit of Arizona’s rallying cry. As future generations look back, they may not recall every detail of this journey, but they will remember the pressure, the pivotal eagle, and what followed.
One hundred years after Button Salmon’s message, Pollo faced a pivotal moment, seeing only the task at hand: one more hole.
