Alexis Ohanian’s Historic Gift Boosts UVA Women’s Basketball Program

Historic Donation Boosts UVA Women’s Basketball Program

The University of Virginia’s women’s basketball program is set to experience a significant transformation thanks to a generous donation from alumnus Alexis Ohanian. Announced by the Virginia Athletics Foundation and Virginia Athletics, this gift marks the largest ever for the Cavaliers’ women’s basketball team and the second most substantial contribution to women’s athletics at UVA.

This donation aims to enhance recruiting and player retention, addressing both financial and competitive challenges in today’s college sports landscape. Ohanian, a 2005 graduate of the McIntire School of Commerce and husband to tennis icon Serena Williams, has consistently championed women’s sports through his philanthropic efforts.

Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams expressed gratitude for Ohanian’s support, stating, “Alexis’ commitment to women’s sports is unparalleled. He sees the value and he is willing to invest. His support will help attract championship talent to the University of Virginia and specifically, to UVA women’s basketball. I am extremely grateful for his foresight and commitment to the future of women’s athletics at the University of Virginia.”

Ohanian’s financial backing builds on UVA’s rich history of success in women’s sports, which includes 11 NCAA team national titles, 57 individual NCAA national championships, and 19 Olympic gold medals. Known for co-founding the social media platform Reddit, Ohanian is also the founder of the venture capital firm Seven Seven Six.
