Experience Historic Festivities

Immerse yourself in Arizona’s rich history through its state parks’ holiday celebrations. At Flagstaff’s Riordan Mansion State Historic Park, visitors can travel back in time with a turn-of-the-century Christmas display, featuring traditional wreaths, garlands, and a fir tree decked with vintage ornaments. Tours are available through December and early January, offering a window into past holiday customs. The Christmas Twilight Tours, held from December 20-23, promise an enchanting experience illuminated by 1904 Edison-style bulbs and luminarias. Santa’s visit on December 20 adds extra holiday magic.

Central Arizona’s Fort Verde State Historic Park and southern Arizona’s Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park are also hosting Victorian Christmas events. Fort Verde’s Candlelight Tours on December 14 and 21 offer a cozy holiday ambiance. Meanwhile, Tombstone’s annual Victorian Christmas on December 14 features free admission, children’s crafts, Faro games, a pickle hunt, magic shows, caroling, and festive photo opportunities, with special appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Innovative Holiday Experiences

For those seeking unique holiday activities, Jerome State Historic Park presents the Unlock the Christmas Spirit challenge from December 13 to 31. Visitors can follow clues in the Douglas Mansion for a scavenger hunt inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Outdoor enthusiasts can join the Winter Solstice Night Hike at Catalina State Park on December 21. This adventure includes walking the Nature Trail Loop under the desert sky, learning about the solstice’s cultural significance, and observing nocturnal wildlife and constellations on this longest night of the year.

Family-Friendly Celebrations and Santa Visits

Arizona’s state parks offer numerous opportunities for family fun this holiday season. Oracle State Park hosts the Santa and Songs event on December 14, where families can meet Santa at the historic Kannally Ranch House, beautifully decorated for the holidays, and enjoy an afternoon filled with music and cheer.

At Patagonia Lake State Park on December 21, visitors can participate in ornament crafting, a campsite decoration contest, and a special visit from Santa, ensuring a magical experience for all.

These festive events across Arizona’s state parks provide the perfect backdrop for a joyful holiday season. Whether you’re exploring historic locations, enjoying candlelit evenings, or hiking under the stars, there is something for everyone. As the New Year approaches, consider beginning 2025 with a First Day Hike on January 1 to embrace the natural beauty of Arizona.
