Arizona Agencies Unite for Heat Awareness Week, Launch New Website

Collaborative Efforts Launched to Tackle Arizona’s Extreme Heat Challenges

ADHS Introduces a New Platform for Heat Safety Information

PHOENIX- As Arizona braces for another season of extreme heat, state agencies are joining forces with local organizations to promote awareness and safety measures.

Governor Katie Hobbs has officially declared May 5 through May 9 as Heat Awareness Week, supported by over a dozen partners statewide. This initiative aims to equip Arizonans with the necessary knowledge and resources to combat heat-related health issues effectively. The campaign will focus on strategies such as hydration, seeking shade, monitoring vulnerable populations, and recognizing symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

In conjunction with the awareness week, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) has unveiled a centralized online resource for heat-related information, heat.az.gov. “This website will permit all Arizonans to access the vital resources they need to stay protected from the heat. I am proud of the myriad of resources available due to our committed state partners. The site will be updated throughout the heat season as additional key resources are identified,” stated Dr. Eugene Livar, Arizona’s Chief Heat Officer.

Throughout Heat Awareness Week, various organizations will leverage the acronym H.E.A.T. to disseminate educational messages each day:

  • Monday, May 5th: (H) Health
  • Tuesday, May 6th: (E) Environment/Weather
  • Wednesday, May 7th: (A) Awareness
  • Thursday, May 8th: (T) Take Action
  • Friday, May 9th: Summary Overview

The campaign is set to align with the Governor’s Extreme Heat Preparedness Plan, ensuring new and current resources are shared with residents. Key partners include the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, Arizona Faith Network, Arizona Office of Tourism, Arizona State University, and several cities and counties, among others.

Residents are encouraged to follow campaign updates and participate by using #HeatAwarenessWeek on social media. For additional details, Jenna Cooper can be contacted via [email protected].
