North Carolina Secures Grant to Enhance Aviation Infrastructure in Appalachian Region
RALEIGH – The aviation sector in western North Carolina is set to receive a significant boost thanks to a $500,000 grant aimed at modernizing and enhancing the capabilities of local airports. The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation announced this funding, which is part of a larger initiative to strengthen economies in the Appalachian region.
Dr. Daniel Findley, associate director of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at N.C. State University, emphasized the transformative potential of the grant, stating, “This grant is a game-changer for our state and the broader Appalachian region. The funding will enable us to conduct crucial research and determine the best strategies to advance air mobility, ensuring North Carolina airports can meet the demands of the future.”
North Carolina is one of three states chosen to receive the Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE) grant. This funding, supported in part by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will finance research to pinpoint essential upgrades at the state’s general aviation airports located in Appalachian counties. These improvements are crucial for adapting to new technologies in the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector and sustainable electric aviation.
The state’s 13 general aviation airports in these counties play a vital role in supporting the local economy, yet many face limitations due to outdated infrastructure. The research supported by the ARISE grant aims to identify specific improvements needed to make these airports AAM-ready, setting a clear path for their future development.
North Carolina State University’s Institute of Transportation Research and Education, in collaboration with Ohio University, will lead assessments to evaluate the current infrastructure needs. This includes enhancing electric utility capacity and installing necessary charging facilities to accommodate AAM aircraft.
Becca Gallas, director of Aviation at NCDOT, highlighted the forward-thinking nature of the project, noting, “Preparing our airports for AAM is a forward-thinking approach that aligns with our state’s Advanced Transportation Mobility Strategic Plan. This project exemplifies our commitment to innovation, economic development, and sustainable infrastructure. Through this research, we will develop models and strategies that can be applied across the region, ensuring that North Carolina remains at the forefront of aviation innovation.”
The aviation sector in North Carolina is a significant economic driver, contributing $72 billion annually and supporting 330,000 jobs. The ARISE grant will play a key role in amplifying the capabilities of the state’s airports, ensuring they can continue to support economic growth and innovation.
