Nucor to Invest $100M in AZ Melt Shop, Adding 140 Jobs by 2024

Nucor’s $100 Million Investment to Boost Steel Production in Arizona

In a significant move to expand its operations, Nucor Corporation, renowned as the largest steel producer in the United States, is set to inject $100 million into constructing a new melt shop in Kingman, Arizona. With this development, the facility will gain the capacity to produce 600,000 tons annually, contributing 140 new jobs to the local economy by 2024.

This investment in a new melt shop at our Arizona bar mill is part of our strategy to grow our core steelmaking business and will help us maintain our market leadership position in steel bar production, stated Leon Topalian, President and CEO of Nucor Corporation. Adding new melt shop capacity will help meet the growing demand for steel bar products in the Western region, which is one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S.

The decision to expand at the Nucor Steel Kingman location comes as the current site, which employs about 80 people, operates as a rolling mill that processes steel billets into coiled wire rod and rebar but lacks a melt shop. The enhanced capacity will cater to the increasing demand for construction materials such as wire rod and rebar, essential for reinforcing concrete in infrastructure projects like roads and bridges.

Nucor’s production method involves recycling scrap metal into new steel products, aligning with its reputation as one of the most sustainable steel producers globally, with an average of 98.5% recycled content in its steel bar products last year.

Nucor’s significant expansion in Kingman adds to the surge in manufacturing activity in Mohave County while supporting construction and other high-value industries, mentioned Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. We are grateful for Nucor’s commitment to Arizona, adding hundreds of high-wage jobs in rural Arizona and driving further economic growth.

Echoing this sentiment, Kingman Mayor Jen Miles added, Nucor’s expansion and resulting high-wage jobs will greatly contribute to the economic prosperity of our city and region. Their investment adds to Kingman’s growing manufacturing base and in doing so, will create exciting new opportunities for our citizens. We welcome Nucor’s expansion and thank them for their positive and ongoing commitment and contributions to our city.

Nucor operates 15 bar mills across the United States, producing a diverse range of steel products for numerous industries, including construction, automotive, and agriculture. The company’s network of mills is pivotal in supplying steel for various applications, from metal building systems to heavy machinery.
