New Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center Opens in Lumberton, NC
In a significant development for mental health care in North Carolina, a new Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC) facility is set to open in Robeson County. The center promises to provide essential services for both children and adults facing mental health crises, offering an alternative to traditional hospital emergency departments.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new BHUC will take place on Friday, April 17, at noon, featuring key speakers from various organizations involved in the project. Kelly Crosbie, Assistant Secretary for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Disorders at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), will be among those addressing the attendees.
A BHUC is designed to offer 24-hour rapid, short-term stabilization for individuals aged four and older who are experiencing crises related to mental health, substance use, or intellectual developmental disorders. These centers aim to provide a more suitable environment for mental health care compared to hospital emergency departments.
Funding for this new facility comes from a $2.2 million investment by NCDHHS, part of a larger mental health initiative supported by the North Carolina General Assembly. This BHUC marks the eighth of 13 planned centers to be opened or expanded under this historic investment.
