Florida Enhances Educational Standards with New Course Approvals
Tallahassee, Fla., January 15, 2025 – In a significant move to enhance educational quality, the State Board of Education has sanctioned a new set of general education courses proposed by Florida’s 28 state colleges. This marks the inaugural occasion where such submissions were mandated to comply with Florida statutes, emphasizing the state’s commitment to delivering foundational knowledge to its students.
Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. remarked on the initiative, stating, “General education courses should be high-quality courses that provide foundational knowledge.” He credited Governor DeSantis for ensuring these courses foster critical thinking and understanding as students transition to specialized studies.
This development stems from SB 266, a legislative measure passed last year, which mandates that public higher education institutions in Florida deliver top-tier education. The newly approved list reflects a 57 percent reduction in the number of general education courses, aiming to enhance focus on statutory compliance and course transferability across state universities.
The board also greenlit two new bachelor’s degree programs at St. Johns River State College in biological science and human services. These programs are tailored to address regional workforce demands and bolster Florida’s reputation as a leader in workforce education.
