Dallas Residents Advised on Coyote Safety During Mating Season

Increased Coyote Activity Prompts Safety Recommendations for Dallas Residents

As the mating season for coyotes begins, the residents of Dallas are likely to observe an uptick in coyote activity. These animals, in their quest to safeguard their families and territories, may become more noticeable and vocal. As they adjust to living closer to human habitats, some coyotes might venture into neighborhoods and backyards, seeking food and shelter. Residents are encouraged to take measures to minimize encounters and ensure the safety of both wildlife and domestic pets.

Dallas Animal Services has outlined several guidelines for dog owners to help prevent unwanted interactions with coyotes:

  • Keep dogs on a leash at all times.
  • Supervise pets when they are in a fenced yard.
  • Avoid walking dogs near creek lines or through vacant fields.
  • Do not allow dogs to roam freely, particularly in areas with high coyote activity, such as White Rock Lake.
  • If a coyote is spotted, deter it by making loud noises, waving arms, and throwing objects in its direction (without aiming to hit the animal).

Effectively managing coyote encounters requires a mix of community education, precautionary steps, and hazing techniques.
