Florida’s Graduation Rate Reaches New Heights at 89.7%
State experiences notable improvement in high school graduation rates over previous years
Tallahassee, Fla.—Florida has achieved a significant milestone in education, as announced by Governor Ron DeSantis. The state’s high school graduation rate has reached an unprecedented 89.7 percent for the 2023-2024 academic year. This marks an uplift of 1.7 percentage points compared to the previous year and surpasses the pre-pandemic rate of 86.9% recorded in the 2018-2019 school year. The achievement is noteworthy, as it is the highest on record outside the pandemic years when assessment requirements were waived.
Governor Ron DeSantis commented, “Florida leads the nation in education because we put education over indoctrination, empower parents, and have made school choice universal. This record graduation rate is a prime metric of our success, in addition to our #1-in-the-nation rating.”
Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. added, “Florida’s graduation rate continues to climb. Florida is number one for education because of our commitment to providing a quality education that fits the needs of each student, and our climbing graduation rate is proof positive that our approach is working. Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, Florida will continue to lead the nation in educational success.”
Key Highlights of Florida’s 2023-2024 Graduation Statistics
- The overall graduation rate improved by 1.7 percentage points from the previous year and 2.4 points since 2021-22.
- African American students saw a 2.1 percentage point increase over last year, with a total rise of 3.3 points since 2021-22.
- Hispanic students experienced a 2.2 percentage point growth from last year and a 3.1 point increase over 2021-22.
- The graduation rate for students with disabilities rose by 1.3 percentage points compared to last year and 3.3 points since 2021-22.
- Economically disadvantaged students had a growth of 2.4 percentage points over last year, totaling a 3.1 point increase from 2021-22.
- English Language learners achieved a remarkable 4.6 percentage point improvement over last year, marking a 7.7 point rise since 2021-22.
Under the administration of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida’s graduation rate has significantly increased from 70.6% to the current record high of 89.7% in 2023-2024.
