Polar Vortex Unleashes Winter Fury Across the Midwest and East Coast
The first significant winter storm of 2025 swept across the United States, stretching from the Midwest to the East Coast, as a polar vortex descended southward. This weather phenomenon, characterized by a vast area of low-pressure cold air, brought snow, ice, and strong winds in its wake.
Charlottesville found itself under the spell of an Arctic surge, with 4 to 6 inches of snow transforming the University of Virginia into a picturesque scene. As most students were still on break and January term classes had shifted online, the campus experienced an unusual tranquility on Monday morning.
Amidst the winter landscape, fourth-year students Mahika Patel and Mansi Patel embraced the snowy day, venturing onto the Lawn to construct an almost flawless snowman, complete with the classic carrot nose.
Throughout the day, more students emerged to enjoy the snowy conditions, partaking in snowball fights on the Lawn, sledding near Shannon Library, and on Nameless Field. The Hoos community relished the rare opportunity for a genuine snow day.
With the cold air set to persist, temperatures are expected to remain below average for the eastern half of the country throughout most of January.
