Progress on Newton Road Roundabout Nearing Completion
The eagerly awaited roundabout on Newton Road is almost ready for use, with its opening scheduled for the week of December 16, provided no unexpected issues arise. The only task remaining is the addition of minor landscaping in the center.
This roundabout is a key component of a new road that will eventually stretch southwards, connecting to the current fountain entrance at the University of Iowa Health Care’s university campus. Construction on this road segment is anticipated to continue through the spring and summer of 2025.
Plans are in place for the sidewalk along the north side of Newton Road to be reinstalled by early 2025, weather permitting. In the meantime, pedestrians are advised to follow the established detours for their safety.
Located next to the roundabout is the newly constructed Health Sciences Interchange. This bus interchange is capable of accommodating up to five buses simultaneously, facilitating easier identification of bus directions for riders. Bus services, including Cambus and city buses, will resume operations to the new interchange, as well as the existing VA Hospital and Hardin Library stops, by December 23.
The construction of this new road is one of several prerequisites for the upcoming development of a new adult inpatient care tower for UI Health Care.
The project opens up new prospects for enhancing bicycle and pedestrian paths within the vicinity.
As of now, the project remains on track and within the allotted budget.
