Iowa’s natural wonders captured the spotlight with the announcement of the USA Today 2017 Readers’ Choice award for the state’s top attractions. A remarkable destination emerged as the favorite among voters, showcasing the allure of Iowa’s diverse landscapes.
Nestled in Jackson County, Maquoketa Caves State Park has been named the winner, drawing more than 150,000 visitors annually. This state park is renowned for its distinctive array of 13 caves, offering more opportunities for exploration than any other park in Iowa.
The online voting process spanned throughout August, culminating in an announcement on September 1. Among the contenders were two state parks, with Pikes Peak State Park in Clayton County securing the seventh spot in the rankings.
Expressing enthusiasm for the accolade, Todd Coffelt, DNR State Parks bureau chief, stated, “We are thrilled with this recognition for both these state parks. We hope people will make plans to visit them as well as others this fall – which is a particularly beautiful time to explore these natural areas.”
